How overtime pay is taxed

Overtime is taxed exactly like regular pay. There is no special overtime tax rate, despite how it feels. Non-exempt employees earn time and a half past 40 hours in a week, and that extra pay flows through the same federal, FICA, and state tax lines as everything else.

The reason a big overtime week feels overtaxed is withholding math. Payroll systems calculate each paycheck as if you earn that amount every period, so an unusually large check gets withheld at a higher rate. Over the full year it evens out, and any excess comes back as a refund.

What actually changes your take-home rate is crossing a tax bracket for the year as a whole. Even then only the dollars above the threshold are taxed at the higher rate, never your whole income.

What to do with this

Overtime never lowers your take-home pay. More gross always means more net, even if the withholding rate on that check looks steep.

Heavy overtime year? Check your W-4. Consistent overtime can leave you underwithheld. W-4 Easy Guide shows the fix.

Common questions

How much is overtime pay?

Overtime is typically 1.5 times your regular hourly rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. For example, if your regular rate is $20/hour, your overtime rate is $30/hour. Some states and industries have different overtime rules.

Is overtime taxed more than regular pay?

No. Overtime is taxed at the same rate as regular wages, it's ordinary income. However, a larger paycheck that includes overtime may push you into a higher withholding tier for that period, making it look like overtime is taxed more. Any over-withholding is refunded when you file your taxes.

How is overtime calculated on my paycheck?

Your employer calculates regular hours at your base rate and overtime hours at 1.5ร— that rate. Both amounts are added to get your gross pay for the period. Then FICA (Social Security and Medicare) and income tax withholding are deducted from the total gross.
